Roopkund
is situated in Chamoli district of garhwal.
The road head for roopkund is lohajung
155km from Almora, 217km from Nainital
and 235km from Kathgodam. Roopkund situated
at a height of 5029m in the lap of Trishuli
massif. This area is usually called
is the 'mystery lake', since human skeletons
and remains of horses from the poleolithic
age were found here. The lake is surrounded
by rock-strewn glacier and snow clad
peaks.
Along the route are fantastic views
of the mighty peaks - Nanda Ghungti
(6310 M) & Trishul (7120 M) The
buggyals of Bedni & Ali are carpeted
with flowers most of the trekking season.
The biggest attraction how ever is the
mystery surrounding the lake. Over 300
people have believed to met their untimely
death here some 500-600 years ago &
nobody is sure how it happened, though
a number of stories & legends relate
the happenings. The mystery lake continues
to hold her secrets, only giving up
some, every few years.
Every 12 years thousands of devout Pilgrims
most of them from Garhwal make an arduous
trek to the lake from Nauti Village.
They follow a mysterious four horned
lamb that is born every 12 years near
Wan village. The lamb leads them to
Nanda Devi shrine thru Roopkund &
Homkund & than carries on, on its
own & finally disappears. This Yatra
(pilgrimage) is known as 'Nanda jat'
or 'Raj jat Yatra'. An annual yatra
known as 'Choti (small) Jat Yatra' is
celebrated every year around the end
of August or beginning of September
that starts from Wan village & ends
at Bedni Bugyal. It is a very colourful
event, giving an insight into local
Garhwali culture.
The starting point of the trek is lohajung,
The trek of Roopkund passes through
lushgreen grassy land and conifer forest
clining into the sloper of hills. The
trek thereafter winds its way along
the pindar river. Bedni bugyal and Bhagwawasa
are the most beautiful places in this
trek. You must found lots of "Bramhakamal"
near Bhawawara. |
