One of the well known wildlife sanctuaries in the south, Periyar wildlife sanctuary attracts a large number of wild life lovers, every year. The Periyar wildlife sanctuary is situated near Kumily (4 km), Kerala, in the hills of the Wesern Ghats in India . Spread over an area of 777 square kilometers, the Periyar sanctuary is an ideal place to watch animals playing in their natural habitat.

This place is ideal for watching the animals in their natural habitat. The forest here slopes into the man-made lake at the bottom of the hill. This lake serves as the waterhole for the animals and they come here to drink or take a dip. Elephants, Gaur, Sambhar and even tigers can be spotted here. In the lap of the mountains, the Periyar wildlife sanctuary's environ is like a canvas of many shades. The fresh air of the moist deciduous forest gives one a chance to experience the peace and serenity and long to return for more.
Best time to Visit – Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
This Sanctuary is a wildlife enthusiast and photographer's dream. It offers excellent accommodation and internal transportation facilities. Visitors can visit Periyar wildlife sanctuary throughout the Year; still the beast period is during the months of October to June.
Wild Attractions in Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
The Sariska National park is rich in both- flora and fauna. The birdlife comprises of Darters, Cormorants, Kingfishers, the great Malabar Hornbill and racket-tailed Drongoes. The reptilian population boasts Of Monitor Lizards that can be spotted basking in the sun, on the rocks along the lakeshore. Visitors who trek into the Periyar national park often see a Python and sometimes even a King Cobra.

Apart from Elephants, the other animals to be seen in the Periyar sanctuary are Gaur, Wild Pigs, Sambar, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Dole or Indian Wild Dog and very rarely, a Tiger. There are, now, an estimated 40 tigers here. Four species of primates are found at Periyar - the rare lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri Langur, Common Langur And Bonnet Macaque. Periyar also happens to be the habitat of the elusive Nilgiri Tahr, which is rarely to be seen.

Over 260 species of migratory and domestic birds are found in the Periyar sanctuary. Some of the major species of birds found in the park comprises the Nilgiri wood pigeons, black-winged kites, blue-winged parakeets, great Indian hornbills, white-bellied tree pies, laughing thrushes, fly catchers, darters, cormorants, barbets and plovers among many others.

Periyar is dotted with many interesting places, including -
Kumily - Situated just 4-kms from Periyar, Kumily is a growing town where tourism is fastly catching up just like the spice trade, the major occupation of this small town. The town is also well equipped with the excellent hotels and resorts for accommodation.

Cradomom Hills - Periyar and Kumily are the most convenient points from which visitors can easily explore Kerala's beautiful Cardamom hills. Guide will approach you at offers of trips via jeep or taxi to the hills and if you can get a group together, these trips work out as a good travel value.

Boat Cruises - Boat cruises make the best option to check out the wilds of Periyar Sanctuary.Today the Periyar lake presents an excellent boating spot for tourists. Although it is unusual to see many animals from the boats, still you spot a family of Elephants, Wild Boar, and Sambar Deer by the water's edge.
How to reach
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary can be easily accessible through air, train or bus.
By Air: The nearest airport is at Kochi(Cochin) at a distance of 200 kilometers from Periyar. One can also take a flight to Madurai in Tamil Nadu, 140 kilometers from the destination.
By Rail: Kottayam at distance of 114 kilometers from Periyar, is the nearest railhead.
By Road: Periyar is well connected via road ways. Kumily, the nearest town from Periyar is properly connected with both the states - Kerala and Tamil Nadu by private buses, state buses or coaches.
