Arrive at the hill resort of Nainital,
A small town in the hills of Kumaon.
Nainital is a lovely hill station surrounded
by mountains on three sides. Once this
area had many lakes and it was called
the City of 60 lakes or 'Chakta'. The
gorgeous greens and the majestic mountains
add to the beauty of the hill resort.
Situated at an altitude of 1,938 meters
the hill resort of Nainital offers several
places of interest to the tourists.
The hill resort is believed to have
derived its name from the goddess Naina.
There is a temple dedicated to the goddess
Naina too in Nainital. Other legend
claims that the Naini Lake in Nainital
lends its name to the hill resort. The
natural beauty and the charm of the
scenic spots besides the cool weather
make Nainital the place to be in during
the summers.
Most of the lakes in the region have
disappeared and whatever remains is
just a glimpse of what they might have
been in the past. Today the life of
Nainital revolves around the lake of
Naini. But there are few other lakes
around Nainital which are equally beautiful
and attractive as the Naini lake. |
| History
of Nainital |
Nainital,
Uttaranchal is famous not just for its
green hills or many lakes. It is also
famous for it's many legends and stories.
Hundreds of ancient temples and peaks
with astounding views of the mountains
in the background add to Nainital's

the stories of the rishis who brought
the waters of the sacred Mansarovar
River to form Suffocating at times with
thousands of tourists, Nainital is also
home to Sherwood, one of India 's most
prestigious schools.
According to a legend Parwati the daughter
of King Daksha held a great 'Yajna'
but did not invite Parvati and her consort
Shiva. Parvati could not bear this direct
insult, in her great fury Parvati gate-crashed
into the 'Yajna' ground and leaped into
the high flames of 'Yajna' fire to end
her life. And later lord Shiva retrieved
her half-charred corpse himself. The
majority of the local people believe
that the eyes of Sati dropped in the
lake while her body was being carried
by Lord Shiva to Kailesh Parvat. Hence,
the lake was given the name of 'Nainital'
or Naini lake. Later the spot became
famous by this very name. |
