Kullu, the
"Valleys of Gods" originally called
Kulanthapitha (End of the Habitable World),
finds mentioned in the epics and the puranas,
and is a popular tourist attraction. So many
festivals are celebrate there in Kullu. After
months of hardwork in the fields and orchards,
there comes the month of Phalgun (mid February
to mid March) that marks the beginning of
fairs and festivals in the valley. These fairs
and festivals are mostly held to celebrate
the victory of good over the evil or recall
any episode related to the deities. They celebrate
the rich cultural and traditional inheritance
of the people in the festival.
One is Kullu Festival, which is celebrate
at Hemis, the biggest Buddhist Monastery in
Ladakh to mark the birth anniversary of Guru
Padmasambhava. Splendid masked dances are
performed to the accompaniment of cymbals,
drums and long horns. A colourful fair, displaying
some beautiful handicrafts, is the special
highlight of the festival. And the another
'Dusshera Festival' is so famous in Kullu,
celebrate with full of spirit. |
Not to be outdone is the Dussehra celebrations
of Kullu, nestles in the lap of Himalayas
. The festivities begin nearly 10 days in
advance and as per tradition, Gods and Goddesses
along with their followers of musicians and
attendants descend from the neighbouring peaks
on the relatively flatter Kullu to make merry
and attend the durbar of Lord Raghunath, who
was brought from Ayodhya, nearly 300 years
ago. While the celestial durbar is in place,
people too are having a great time in the
melas and animal fairs held on the occasion.
Dussehra, symbolising the triumph of good
over evil, is celebrated in grand style in
Kullu region in Himachal Pradesh. When Dussehra
celebrations come to an end in the rest of
the country, they begin at Kullu. These ten
days of festivity is a time when the valley
is at its best. The people in Kullu rejoice
for seven long days. Colourful processions
of devotees bearing gold and silver images
of gods and goddesses move to Kullu from all
parts of the valley. The first day is marked
by the homage paid to Lord Raghunath. The
next nine days are marked by rituals, the
graceful Natti dances, singing and other performances. |
| As
part of the festival, traders from all over
the valley set up temporary stalls. They offer
woollen shawls, blankets, caps, Pullan (the
traditional footwear made from plant fibre
and goat hair) and many other things. This
is the best time to see the crafts of the
Kullu valley, especially the traditional clothing
of its people. |
