Kozhikode,
the most important region of Malabar
in past years, was the capital of the
powerful Zamorins and also a prominent
trade and commerce center. It was here
at Kappad that Vasco Da Gama landed
in his search for the spices of the
Orient. Today the serene beaches, lush
green countryside, historic sites, all
combine to make this a popular tourist
destination filled with a warm ambience.
It is the Headquarters of the Latin
Catholic congregation in Malabar. Built
in the Goethic style, the church is
a tribute to the beauty of Italian architecture
and the skill of Indian craftsmen. It
is said that Italian architects were
brought to Kozhikode to design the church.

| History
of the Beach |
| According to Keralan
tradition, the powerful king Cheraman
Perumal is said to have converted from
Hinduism to Islam and left for Mecca
"to save his soul", never
to return. Before he set sail he divided
Kerala between his relatives, all of
whom were to submit to his nephew, who
was given the kingdom of Kozhikode and
the title zamorin, equivalent to emperor.
The city prospered and, perhaps because
of the story of the convert king, became
the preferred port of Muslim traders
from the Middle East in search of spices,
particularly pepper. During the Raj,
it was an important centre for the export
of printed Indian cotton, whence the
term "calico", an English
corruption of the name Calicut - itself
an anglicized version of the city's
original Malayalam name, which has now
been reinstated. Today, due to strong
ties with the Gulf where numerous sons
of the city work, Kozhikode is flourishing
with the injection of new wealth. |

of Beach |
| Kozhikode Beach
is a favourite haunt of sunset viewers.
Its natural beauty and old world charm
makes it a dreamy place to visit. The
beach has an old lighthouse and two
crumbling piers running into the sea,
each more than a hundred years old.
Children can be entertained at the Lions
Park and the Marine Water Aquarium.

Time to Visit |
| The climate of
the state, as in the most of the other
part of India, is tropical. The summer
comes to the state in April and continues
for the next four months. The maximum
temperature during this season is around
33°C. Monsoon touches the state
in June and remains there till September
though not much difference in temperature
can be felt. Winter is from October
to January and temperature drops a bit.
The weather is never too chilly in Kerala. |
