Jaisalmer is an important city of the western state of India , Rajasthan. It is popular for camel safaris & it's living "Golden Fort". It was a major trading center in the medieval times. In medieval times, its prosperity was due to its location on the main trade route linking India to Egypt , Arabia , Persia , Africa and the West.
The perfect time to visit the golden city is during the Desert Festival. The Desert Festival takes place in January-February of each year. Camel races and dances, folk music, desert ballads, puppeteers - they're all part of the activity. At the full moon night, a sound and light drama is performed at Sam.
Brief History
Known as the Golden City , Jaisalmer was founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 A.D.. Jaisalmer remained unaffected by foreign influence for a long period due to its distant location, the period which included the days of the British Raj. The Golden City of Jaisalmer was the last state to sign the Instrument of Agreement with the British. The magnificence and the glory of this Golden City - Jaisalmer can be least rivalled with other cities of the world.
Shopping in Jaisalmer
Jaisalmer is famous for mirror work, woollen pattu, embroidered articles and other items made of good quality, wooden boxes, locally produced wood, curios, silver jewellery and trinklets. The main shopping areas are Sadar Bazaar and Sonaron Ka Bas, Manak Chowk, Pansari Bazaar and also Rajasthali - Government shop for handicrafts and Khadi Gramodyog.

Jaisalmer can be easily accessed through air, train or road.
By Air : Indian Airlines operates flights to Jodhpur, Jaipur, Mumbai and Delhi from Jaisalmer.
By Rail : There are two trains IJPJ and Jodhpur express which operates daily from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur. Jodhpur is connect to all the major cities of the country by a meter gauge line.
By Road : A good network of roads joins Jaisalmer with Jodhpur and many other destinations in and around Rajasthan. There are many deluxe buses operating daily from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, Jaipur, Bikaner.

The Jaisalmer Fort : The golden hued Jaisalmer Fort 'Sonar Killa' is located on the top of the Trikuta Hill and it is visible from a distance of about 15 kilometres from Jaisalmer. From a distance, the Jaisalmer fort seemed to be rising from the heart of the Thar Desert . This is the fort, which creates a golden aura, as the rays of the afternoon sun kisses its yellow sandstone walls and bastions, giving it a name - Sonar Kila or the Golden Fort.
Patwon Ki Haveli : The Patwon ki haveli is the grandest mansion in Jaisalmer, having ceiling supported by exquisitely carved pillars. The delicately chiselled balconies and extensive corridors and chambers of this haveli also present an impressive sight.
Jain Temples : These all temples were built in the 12th - 15th century within the Jaisalmer Fort. They are beautifully carved and dedicated to Sambhavnathji and Rikhabdevji. The Gyan Bhandar, a library containing some extremely old manuscripts, is within the temple complex.
Desert National Park : An extensive variety of desert birdlife, ranging from birds of prey to sandgrouse, shrikes, warblers and desert coursers, doves, bee-eaters, are to be found in the National Park.
