History |

as the Golden City , Jaisalmer was founded
by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 A.D.. Jaisalmer remained
unaffected by foreign influence for a long
period due to its distant location, the period
which included the days of the British Raj.
The Golden City of Jaisalmer was the last
state to sign the Instrument of Agreement
with the British. The magnificence and the
glory of this Golden City - Jaisalmer can
be least rivalled with other cities of the

The Jaisalmer Fort : The
golden hued Jaisalmer Fort 'Sonar Killa' is
located on the top of the Trikuta Hill and
it is visible from a distance of about 15
kilometres from Jaisalmer. From a distance,
the Jaisalmer fort seemed to be rising from
the heart of the Thar Desert . This is the
fort, which creates a golden aura, as the
rays of the afternoon sun kisses its yellow
sandstone walls and bastions, giving it a
name - Sonar Kila or the Golden Fort. |
| Patwon
Ki Haveli : The Patwon ki haveli
is the grandest mansion in Jaisalmer, having
ceiling supported by exquisitely carved pillars.
The delicately chiselled balconies and extensive
corridors and chambers of this haveli also
present an impressive sight. |

Jain Temples : These all
temples were built in the 12th - 15th century
within the Jaisalmer Fort. They are beautifully
carved and dedicated to Sambhavnathji and
Rikhabdevji. The Gyan Bhandar, a library containing
some extremely old manuscripts, is within
the temple complex. |

Park : An extensive
variety of desert birdlife, ranging from birds
of prey to sandgrouse, shrikes, warblers and
desert coursers, doves, bee-eaters, are to
