Located
in the southern state of India , Kerala, Idukki
National Park is one of Kerala's finest havens
for wildlife . A land-locked district, Idukki
is one of the most nature rich areas of Kerala.
The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary here spreads
over an area of 77 sq km in the Thodupuzha
and Udumpanchola taluks of the district. Located
at an altitude of 450-748 mt above sea level,
Idukki National Park occupies the forestland
between the Cheruthoni River and the Periyar
River covering an area of 33 sq km.
The landscape includes a scenic lake around
the sanctuary, which adds to the beauty of
the sanctuary. The lake, which surrounds the
sanctuary on three sides, is covered by an
charming canopy of tropical evergreen and
deciduous trees. You can enjoy boat ride on
the lake. |

Sanctuary is a wildlife enthusiast and photographer's
dream. It offers excellent accommodation and
internal transportation facilities. Wildlife
enthusiasts can visit Idukki Sanctuary throughout
the year, but the best period to visit the
Idukki Sanctuary is between the months of
October to April. |

Fuana
- Home to vast herds of Elephants,
bisons, bear, wild boars, sambar wild dogs,
jungle cats, tiger, wild boar and has a very
large concentration of various species of
snakes including cobra, viper, kraits and
numerous non-poisonous ones. The bird life
in the sanctuary is equally impressive.
Avifuana - Important birds
include myna, jungle fowl, black bulbul, laughing
thrush, woodpecker, peafowl, kingfisher etc.

| Idukki
Arch Dam - Idukki arch dam is the
world's second and Asia 's first arch dam,
constructed across the Kuravan and Kurathi
hills. 550 feet high and 650 feet wide, the
dam lies close to the Cheruthoni Barrage.
To its west is the Kulamavu Dam. Idukki Wildlife
Sanctuary is located closeby. |
