Udhagamandalam
(Ooty), the "Queen of hill stations"
is the capital of Nilgiri district.
It is one of the Best tourist resorts
and is called as "Blue Mountains".
It is a land of dreams and a picturesque
hill station. It offers spectacular
scenic beauty and bracing climate. It
is situated at a distance of 105 km
away from Coimbatore. The height of
the hills in the Nilgiri range varies
between 2280 and 2290 meters, the highest
peak being Doddabetta at a height of
2623 meters. Aptly called the queen
of southern hills, Ooty is located in
the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The
original name of the place was Udhagamandalam,
but with the advent of the British,
it was rechristened as Ooty. British
founded this hill resort which seemed
them as their summer headquarters. Every
year, it draws thousands of tourists
who come to Ooty to escape from the
dry and dusty summer days of the plains.
This hilly region came under the rule
of the British East India Company when
it signed a treaty with Tipu Sultan
at Srirangapatnam in the year 1799.
It was developed into a hill station
on the initiative of John Sullivan,
a District Collector in the British
Raj. A government house was built and
a typical British lifestyle developed
with the setting up of cottages and
clubs, with facilities for tennis, golf,
and horse riding. Numerous tea estates
make Ooty a great destination for a
honeymoon in India. There is a regular
bus service from Bangalore, Mysore,
Coimbatore, Calicut, Kanyakumari, Tanjavur,
Tirupati and Cochin. Buses ply regularly
to Mudhumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, Kotagiri,
Coonoor and Doddabeta.
Ooty is one of the main towns of Nilgiris
and has a varied topography. There is
something special about Ooty with that
lushy vegetation, the funnel-shaped
blossoms covering the hills in floral
profusion and the lavender-blue flowers
spread over the mountains will pack
you with memories for a lifetime. Ooty
is nestled amid four majestic hills
- Doddabetta, Snowdon, Elk Hill and
Club Hill. Part of the Nilgiri range
conjoins the western and eastern ghats.
