Chowpatty
beach is situated in the heart of
Mumbai and has got rich historical
link ups with the freedom movement.
Presently this is the spot where Lord
Ganesha's images are immersed after
the conclusion of the Ganesha Chaturthi
festival in August/September when
large images of the elephant-headed
god are immersed in the murky sea.
As a part of the city's cleanliness
and beautification drive, Chowpatty
is also being given a face-lift. This
beach is the venue where many Hindu
religious ceremonies can be witnessed
like the annual thread-tying ceremony
initiating young boys into the Brahmin
caste. Another festival 'Nariel Purnima'
is celebrated towards the end of the
monsoons.
This is probably the "Chowpattization"
of an outing spot. Chowpatty beach
in Mumbai is frequented less by localites
and more by tourists to the city.
Like tourist destinations, the moment
an outing destination is crowded,
people begin to seek other destinations.
Nothing like an air conditioned mall
to while time away especially in the
scorching summer.
