| Barmer
is a center for woodcarving, embroidery, carpets,
block printing and other handicrafts and its
products are famous throughout Rajasthan.
Otherwise, this desert town, 220 km from Jodhpur
and 153 km from Jaisalmer, isn't very exciting.
There's no fortress here and the most interesting
part is probably the journey to Barmer through
small villages, their mud-walled houses decorated
with delicate folk motifs and the characteristic
geometrical designs of each different village.
|
|
Especially famous are the geometric ajrak
prints in dark shades of red and blue, ideal
for protection against the sun. It might be
worth coming for the cattle fair, held at
Tilwara nearby over a fortnight in March /
April which adds a charm to the place. The
festival is the best time to plan a visit
to Barmer. |

Shiv, Siwana, Pachpadra and the Chohatan area
and was formed in 1949 upon the merger of

dances and music and today is the centre for
