The
hill station of Saputara is located
at an altitude of 873 m above the sea
level on a plateau in the Dang forest
area of the Sahyadri range. 'Saputara'
means the 'abode of serpents' and a
snake image on the banks of the river
Sarpagana is worshipped by the 'adivasis'
(tribals) on festivals like Holi. Saputara
is situated 160 kms from Surat. Legend
has it that Lord Rama spent 11 years
of his exile in these very forests.
Saputara experiences a uniform weather
all through the year. The temperature
goes up to as high as 28 degree C during
the summers thus making it the ideal
place to spend the summers. Although
one can visit Saputara all year the
round, yet the best time to visit Saputara
is from the middle of the march to the
November.
Saputara has been developed as a
well-planned hill resort with hotels,
parks, swimming pools theatres and
a museum. It has several gardens and
picturesque locations make it an ideal
getaway. The resort is equipped with
adventure sports facilities like paragliding.
The tribal of Saputara also attract
the visitors for their unique dance.
The thick forest around Saputara is
dotted with Adivasi tribal, villages
and heir unique dance is great interest
to visitors.
Visitors can pick up pretty pieces
of pottery, jewellery, vases, paintings,
pen stands, key chains, all made from
bamboo chips and other locally found
material. Children can learn to make
simple items in the workshop organised
by the craftsmen.

Saputara
is a small hill station. The town provides
a panoramic view of the lush green hilly
environs. Travelers can enjoy the scenic
beauty of this place by taking a walk
around. It has a number of trekking
trails around it. Today, the Saputara
is very rich in tourist spots. A nature
lover's paradise, the famous hill resort
of Saputara offers a lot of sites to
visit. Few of them are -
The Saputara Lake is
the main attraction of the hill resort.
There is a Boat Club here from where
you can hire sailboats, paddleboats
and rowing boats and enjoy boating in
the lake. The Sun Rise and Sun Set Points
provide panoramic and varied views of
the sun. It also provides a perfect
view of Saputara. You can reach Malegaon
after a 1.5 km walk in the direction
of Waghai. There are several gardens
at Saputara like the Lake Garden, the
Step Garden and the Rose Garden. These
gardens are a perfect place to laze
around while on a holiday.
The Nageshwar Mahadev Temple
has the idol of the Lord Shiva. The
temple is visited by a lot of people
because of its religious sanctity. The
museum of Saputara is well-kept museum,
which provides the information about
the tribes of Dangs. The tribal ornaments
and musical instruments are exhibited
in the museum. Gira Waterfalls is 52
km away. It is an ideal place for picnic.
Vansda National Park
attracts a lot of tourists. It was originally
a private forest of the Maharaja of
Vansda. It covers an area of 24 sq km
and has tigers, leopards, python, four-horned
antelope, pangolin, rusty-spotted cats
and giant squirrels. The permission
from the Chief Wildlife Warden of Gandhinagar
or DFO, Ahwa is required before visiting
the park.
The Purna Sanctuary is
a part of the dense moist deciduous
forests in the Western Ghats of Gujarat.
It covers an area of 160 sq. km. And
is situated at Mahal, which is 60 km
north of Dangs. Bamboo lined pathways
are provided for the trekkers. Prior
permission is needed to visit this park.
And the other, excursions from Saputara
are -
60 km from Saputara, you may visit
Wildlife Sanctuary in Mahal Bardipura
forest. The Mahal Bardipura forest
is bestowed with rivers and bamboo
glades thus offering excellent walking
and trekking options.
Gira waterfalls that
make excellent excursion option from
Saputara. Just 52 km away from Saputara
the Gira Waterfalls should not be missed
especially during the months of June
to November. |

airport to Saputara is at Mumbai. There
are a couple of flights from there for
Saputara.

railway station at Waghai on the Billimora-Waghai
