One
of the most popular getaways from Mumbai
and Pune, Lonavala is a beautiful hill
station in Maharshtra, also known as
the jewel of the Sahyadri Mountains.
It Is situated on a hieght of 625 mtrs.
above sea level and is a popular gateway
from Mumbai and Pune. It also serves
as a starting point for tourists interested
in visiting the famous, ancient Buddhist
rock cut caves of Bhaja and Karla, which
are located near this hill station.

Lonavala and Khandala.
Lonavala derived its name from the
Sanskrit word 'Lonavli', which means
'city surrounded by caves'. The region
around Lonavala was once a popular
Buddhist center. The caves around
the hill resort date back to 2nd century
BC. Lonavala was once under the rule
of Chattrapati Shivaji and later Peshwas
ruled the region before British overthrew
the Peshwas.

Lonavala
is a small hill station. The town provides

Bhushi Dam, en route to INS Shivaji,
overflows during monsoons.
The Rajmachi Point is 5 kilometers

the 17th century warrior king Shivaji's
fort from the Rajmachi Point.
The Lonavala Lake,
2 kilometers from the town center, is
a beautiful spot popular with picnickers.
Kuhne lies 2.5 kilometers from Lonavala.
It is a green spot that has lush vegetation
after the monsoons.
The Walwan Dam, 2 kilometers
from Lonavala, has a lush, green garden
close to it. It supplies water for power
generation to Lonavala town.
The Rye Wood Park,
adjacent to Lonavala's railway station,
is famous for its dense woods.
From Lonavala, Lohgarh
Fort lies 12 kilometers away in the
town of Malwali. Built by Shivaji, this
fort once had the reputation of being
impregnable. |

By Air: Nearest airport
is situated in Pune at 64-km.
By Rail: Lonavala is
on the main railway line between Mumbai
and Pune. All express trains plying
between the two cities stop here. There
is also an hourly shuttle service for
Pune.
By Road:Lonavala situated
on the Mumbai Pune Highway. It is 104-km
from Mumbai and 64-km from Pune. The
bus service between Lonavala and Pune
is good. Buses shuttle between Lonavala
and Khandala. Travelers can hire bicycles
on hourly basis to explore Lonavala
or to go to Khandala.
