Khandala
is one of the important hill stations,
located in the western part of the western
state of Maharashtra, India. Khandala
is nestled in the Sahyadri hills. Situated
101 km southeast of Mumbai and 69 km
from Pune, the hill resort is 5 km from
Lonavala. Khandala is endowed with abundant
natural beauty. It also provides a popular
gateway from the hustle and bustle of
cities of Mumbai and Pune. It is comparatively
small as compare to lonavala but it
is equally blessed with natural beauty
and bounty. Deep valley on one side
and high hills on the other side divide
Khandala and Lonavala. Whenever a tourist
visits Lonavala he also wishes to visit
Khandala. Once visited never forgotten,
Khandala is a hill station, which dazzles
the visitors with its spectacular scenery,
verdant hills, deep green valleys, beautiful
lakes and waterfall. Adventure seekers
can try their hand at rock climbing
at the Duke's Nose peak and other locations
in the Karla hills, near Khandala.
The origin of Khandala is shrouded in
obscurity. The hill resort formed part
of the territory of the great Maratha
leader Chattrapati Shivaji, who is credited
with organizing the Maratha into a military
power. Later it came under the rule
of the Peshwa, during whole reign Maratha
power reached its zenith. The British
took Khandala from the hands of the
Peshwas who subsequently lost power
to the British. |

Khandala
is a small hill station. The town provides
a panoramic view of the lush green hilly
environs. Travelers throng this place

Today, the Khandala is very rich in

Tugauli Lake, Lonavala Lake and Bhushi
Lake are worth visiting; so is the Walvan
Dam.
Karla, 15 kilometers
from Khandala, has large man made caves
dedicated to Lord Buddha. Built in 80
BC, these well-preserved caves are one
of the best examples of temple architecture
in India. The Bhaja
Caves, more than 2,000 years
old, are monasteries that housed Buddhists
monks of yore. This group of 18 caves
has magnificent rock cut artwork.
Many avid rock climbers visit Khandala
for climbing and rappelling down unusual
structures like the Duke's Nose. The
Duke's Nose was reportedly named so
due to its resemblance to the nose of
the Duke of Wellington.
There is a Shiva temple atop Duke's
Nose.
The Reversing Station Point is famous
for its breathtaking view of Duke's
Nose and trains changing lines on either
side.
Vaghdari, or Tiger's
Leap, offers a splendid view of Lonavala

can easily access through air, train
and bus.
By Air: Nearest airport
is situated in Pune at 64-km.
By Rail: Lonavala is
on the main railway line between Mumbai
and Pune. All express trains plying
between the two cities stop here. There
is also an hourly shuttle service for
Pune.
By Road:Lonavala situated
on the Mumbai Pune Highway. It is 104-km
from Mumbai and 64-km from Pune. The
bus service between Lonavala and Pune
is good. Buses shuttle between Lonavala
and Khandala. Travelers can hire bicycles
on hourly basis to explore Lonavala
or to go to Khandala.
