Itanagar,
capital of the state of Arunachal Pradesh
also as known as 'the Land of the Dawnlit
Mountains', is Spread well over an area
of 2,500 acres. Located in the northeastern
state of Arunachal Pradesh is the hill
resort of Itanagar. Itanagar is incredible
and incomparable in natural beauty.
The entire state of Arunachal Pradesh
has been thrown open to tourism recently
in 1998. Besides security it was done
as an attempt to preserving the centuries
old heritage of the tribal communities
in the area. The virginal beauty of
the state capital, Itanagar attracts
several tourists from far and away.
However, Itanagar can be called as "Mini
India", as people from all over
the country, lives here in harmony.
As a capital town, Itanagar is well
connected with the rest of the country
by road and air communications.
Nestled on top of low flat hills, the
city offers a lovely climate. Itanagar
is placed in a beautiful and serene
surroundings with a bracing climate
making them its hallmark qualities.
Ruins of a old palace and other such
monuments embraces within themselves
the city's ancient history, some historians
even identify the city with the ancient
11th century capital of Mayapur, under
the Jitari dynasty. Itanagar today is
divided into two parts, each 10 km apart
from each other, with the older one

Today,
the Itanagar is very rich in tourist
spots. A nature lover's paradise, the
famous hill resort of Itanagar offers
a lot of sites to visit. Few of them
are –
Buddhist Temple,
consecrated by the Dalai Lama, the Buddhist
temple, a beautiful yellow roofed shrine
reflects the extensive Tibetan influence
and provides good views of Itanagar
and the surrounding countryside.
Ita Fort, Itanagar,
the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh
is derived from his historical fort
called Ita Fort situated at the heart
of the capital complex in Papum Pare
district. It is a historical fort of
an irregular shape, built mainly with
bricks. Jawaharlal
Nehru State Museum, provides
a kaleidoscope of Arunachal Pradesh
and one can see woodcarvings, musical
instruments, textiles, handicrafts and
archeological finds, while a workshop
in the Handicrafts Centre specializes
in traditional cane manufacture. It
has a library section also.
And the other, excursions from Itanagar
are -
Ganga Lake or Gyakar Sinyi,
The capital houses the Rajbhawan, the
official residence of the Governor has
also many worth visiting places in and
around Itanagar. These include legendary
Ganga Lake (Gyakar Sinyi). It is a beautiful
picnic spot, 6-kms away from Itanagar,
a green forest lake surrounded by primeval
vegetation, orchids masses on tall trees,
tree ferns provides a small taste of
the magnificent forests of the state.
There are several sites worth visiting
near Itanagar. You may spot the snow
leopard and the clouded leopard amongst
the other animals at the Namdhapa National
Park.
Then there is the beautiful Bomdila.
High Himalayas, amazing apples, marvelous
monasteries and the crafts centre are
the major attractions at Bomdila. Hill
town of Rupa on the banks of Tenga River,
Tawang, Malinithan, Tezu et al are excellent
excursion options from Itanagar. |

to reach |
Itanagar
can easily access through air, train
and bus.
By Air: nearest airport
to Itanagar, at Lilabari in Assam, 67-km
away, and served by connecting buses,
is served by fights to and from Guwahati
(2 hr 20min) and to, but not from Dibrugarh
(45 min). There is also a trice weekly
Pawan Hans helicopter service between
Itanagar and Guwahati.
By Rail: Fast passenger
trains from Guwahati run as far as Harmuti,
33-km away in Assam.
By Road: Overnight
buses connect Itanagar with Guwahati
(11 hr), and Arunachal State Transport
run an extensive service throughout
the state. Buses leave for Tinsukia
in the evening, arriving early the following
morning, and from there connections
can be made to Namdapha and Parashuramkunda. |
