Surrounded
by the Western Ghats in the East, Idukki
lies at an altitude of 2500 feet above
sea level. One of the most beautiful
districts in Kerala, Idukki was carved
out of Devikulam in 1972. The place
derives its name from Malayalam word
'Idukku' which means a narrow gorge.
Situated in the southern most part of
Kerala, god's own country, has a bit
of history tagged along with it. Idukki
promises an unforgettable vacation comprising
of touring the wild life sanctuaries,
forests, spices plantation and explore
the virgin beauty of nature, all while
taking an elephant ride! Idukki has
a large population of tribals who have
unique customs and beliefs and maintain
a culture alien to mainstream ethos.
Idukki is one of the most nature rich
areas of Kerala. The high range and
wooded valleys are girded by three main
rivers - Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar
- and their tributaries. Idukki is also
home to Periyar River, which flows through
two gargantuan rock formations in the
region, which again have mythological
tales and legends associated with them.
