Surrounded by the Western Ghats in the East, Idukki lies at an altitude of 2500 feet above sea level. One of the most beautiful districts in Kerala, Idukki was carved out of Devikulam in 1972. The place derives its name from Malayalam word 'Idukku' which means a narrow gorge.

Situated in the southern most part of Kerala, god's own country, has a bit of history tagged along with it. Idukki promises an unforgettable vacation comprising of touring the wild life sanctuaries, forests, spices plantation and explore the virgin beauty of nature, all while taking an elephant ride! Idukki has a large population of tribals who have unique customs and beliefs and maintain a culture alien to mainstream ethos.

Idukki is one of the most nature rich areas of Kerala. The high range and wooded valleys are girded by three main rivers - Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar - and their tributaries. Idukki is also home to Periyar River, which flows through two gargantuan rock formations in the region, which again have mythological tales and legends associated with them.
Prime Attractions in Idukki
Today, the Idukki is very rich in tourist spots. A nature lover's paradise, the famous hill resort of Idukki offers a lot of sites to visit. Few of them are –

Kuthumkal Waterfalls, the misty waterfall provides a picturesque view of the water, cascading down from scintillating heights. The sheer beauty of the place allures thousands of visitors every year..

Observatory Hills, is a beautiful hill located at Nedumkandam. It's a perfect location for people who are interested in watching the heavenly bodies, as the sky here is free from pollution.

Cheruthoni, 5kms from Painavu, it encompasses areas in and around Idukki Arch Dam and Cheruthoni Dam. Constructed across the Periyar river, between two granite hills, the picturesque Idukki Dam is the first arch dam in India.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, is a unique thorny scrub forest with xerophyte species. Chinnar is the habitat of the endangered Giant Grizzled Squirrel of India.

Idukki Arch Dam, constructed across the Kuravan and Kurathi hills is the world's second and Asia's first arch dam. The dam lying close to the cheruthoni barrage is 550 ft high and 650 ft. wide. To its west is the Kulamavu Dam.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, extends over the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluka of Idukki district, spreading over 77 sq km and is about 450-748 m above sea level. extending to 33 sq. km, the Idukki Reservoir is formed by three dams, namely Cheruthoni, Idukki and Kulamavu.

Marayoor, is 40 kilometers away from Munnar. It is the only place in Kerala having a natural growth of sandal wood trees. The relics of new Stone Age civilization have been unearthed here.
And the other, excursions from Idukki are -
The famous tiger reserve of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary at Thekkady makes an excellent excursion from Idukki. For the wildlife enthusiast, a tour to the sanctuary is something of an absolute must. The natural vegetation, verdant hills and an artificial lake make a visit to this sanctuary an experience once in a lifetime. Thekkady also offers you opportunities to indulge in trekking, elephant rides and boating.

Another famous place fit for excursion from Idukki is another the hill resort of Peermade, once the summer retreat of the erstwhile rules of Tranvancore. Peermade is known for its gorgeous green grasslands, magnificent waterfalls and plantations of tea, coffee, rubber et al.

Experience the nature at its exuberant best at the hill resort of Munnar. Munnar abounds with the tea plantations, forests and the wildlife.
How to reach
Idukki can be easily accessed through air, train or road.
By Air :The nearest airport is at Cochin 132 km away.

By Rail : The nearest railway station is at Kottayam, 133 km away.

By Road : Idukki can be reached by mortable roads from most parts of Kerala.
