Located
in the Nilgiri hills, the second largest
famous hill station is - Coonoor, famous
for its verdant environs and for a variety
of wildflowers and birds. Coonoor is
located in the western part of the state
of Tamilnadu, in the southern region
of India, at the head of the Hulikal
ravine at an altitude of 1850 m above
sea level. It is 19 km from Ooty. The
weather in Coonoor is pleasant. It experiences
southwestern monsoon rains in July-September.
Coonoor the famous hill station in Nilgiri
offers the tourists exotic panoramic
view of the lush green Nilgiri hills,
with its ravines, valleys, and waterfalls.
Bird lovers can enjoy bird watching,
as the place is full of beautiful and
rare birds including black woodpecker,
parakeets, barbets, mynas, cuckoos,
Malabar trogon, Malabar gray hornbill,
crested hawk eagle, and crested serpent
eagle.
The hill resort is famous for festivals
and fairs, which attract people in large
number. One of the famous festivals
is the annual fruit and vegetable festival
that is held at the Sim's Park in the
month of May. A part of the summer festival
it attracts people from all parts of
the world. A tea and tourism festival
is held every winter. There is plenty
to keep the shopper occupied and pleased
at the hill resort of Coonoor. Coonoor
features great shopping and has a number
of well-known shops where you can buy
the South Indian artifacts. |

| Britishers
developed Ooty as a very popular hill
station for them to avoid the devastating
Indian summer. But,soon Ooty became
a popular tourist spot and lost its
charm by the high traffic of visitors
visiting the place.Soon a need was felt
to have another eqally beatiful hill
station.This gave birth to Coonoor.The
grassy meadows, lovely sunflowers, marigolds
and rhododendrons became a benchmark
for this beautiful hill station. |

| Today,
the Coonoor are very rich in tourist
spots. A nature lover's paradise, the
famous hill resort of Coonoor offers
a lot of sites to visit. Few of them

Sim's Park- which derives
its name from J.D. Sim, the secretary
of the Madras Club in the year 1874.
Situated in a deep ravine at an elevation
of 1768 to 1798 mts. the park covers
12 hectares and treats you with an incredible
variety of flora including the magnolia,
pines, tree ferns and camellia, lending
a special charm to the park..
Pasteur Institute
- established in 1907, the institute
conducts research on Rabies and polio
and has carved a niche in the field
of developing vacancies against these
diseases. You will need special permission
from the Director of the institute to
visit the institute, as it is not a
public place. Pomological
Station - another major landmark
of Coonoor. One of the three experimental
fruit gardens in the Nilgiris maintained
by the Horticultural Department of the
Tamil Nadu Government. The other two
are Burliar and Kallar on the Coonoor
- Mettupalayam Road. A research center
of repute, the Pomological Station carries
research on different fruits, which
are grown here. Prominent among them
are apples, plums, peaches, persimmons,
lemons, apricots and pomegranates. Surplus
fruits are sold to the public.
And the other, Bird watchers visiting
Coonoor will be delighted to spot species
like the cormorants, pipits, thrushes,
parakeets, skylarks, Nilgiri verditer,
etc. |

By Air :Coimbatore
airport is nearest to Coonoor, it has
daily flights to and from Madras, Bangalore,
Cochin and Trivandrum.
By Rail : Toy
train route between Mettupalayam and
Ooty has Coonoor in its route.Another
alternative is from Coimbatore, it takes
around 3 hrs to Coonoor. By
Road : Regular bus services
from Coimbatore,Ooty and Kotagiri makes
Coonoor well connected. |
